The Wheelie

Gregg was a classmate of mine and a very forgiving soul. We were at a party at Lake Viking in the summer of 1979. At the time I  had a 1971 XLCH Sportster with an eight inch extended front end. We needed something from town and I volunteered to go. Gregg was thinking about getting a bike at the time and wanted to ride along so off we went me and Gregg who was wearing shorts and sandals at the time. We made a very fast trip to Cameron along old 69 and came to the intersection of old 69 and 36 before the overpass with just a stoplight there.

A 1971 XLCH Sportster with an eight eight over front end double loaded with two people wheelies very easily. So we are stopped at the light at old 69 and 36 it turns green I give the Sporty heck. The front end comes up over 45%. Gregg slides off the back before the bike crushes him but ,his right sandal catches on the passenger foot peg and he is getting drug across the intersection on his rear end. This caused the Sporty to fall to the left well, then I put my left foot down to catch it and broke my leg.

I want you to understand that this was totally my fault and Gregg who had a four inch round road rash on his rear end with various other cuts and damages should have kicked my rear. He had a Black Belt and there was no doubt he could have got the job done. Gregg though very calmly got me out of traffic, administered first aid, and got an ambulance. He stayed with me all the way to  the ambulance then checked up on me at the emergency room. He never said a harsh word to me about it but he did say he did not want a bike anymore. I guess I ruined that for him.

Gregg you are gone to fast and I will miss you my friend!!!
